You hear community organizers talk on Morning Edition, and you realize that nation-states need legions of saps and NPR collaborators to do their bidding (and bombing and predatory lending). But make no mistake, I love Morning Edition.

We play March 9th at the AS220 with Orcabeat, the best techno act in Providence complete with whale sounds and live guitar. I expect all of our readers to attend, even the stalwarts in Latvia. We’ll arrange for travel visas and books-on-tape. Expect more of a Robert Lowell vibe than a RZA vibe from Men […]

So Hillary watches Saturday Night Live. Bet she still thinks it’s hip. In other news, today’s oxymorons include government oversight and prose poetry (Russel Edison excepted). Today’s morons include Wolf Blitzer, Cappadonna (on the strength of some unfortunate YouTube interviews) and the children of Brooke Astor.

Like the bees afflicted by Colony Collapse Disorder, which has wiped out 90% of them in parts of the U.S., bats in the Northeast are dropping off by the thousands. The ones remaining, they say, are too emaciated to last the winter. A white fungus around the nose is the mark of their mysterious condition.

I saw two “conservative” pundits on TV last night, and one of them compared Barack to Vlad Putin. He said the two men had similar political philosophies, only Barack had “less focus and strength of character.” Barack, for all of his sound and fury, is not an autocrat. He will not force twenty-somethings to pay […]

I disdain politics, especially national politics, and I prefer to stay aloof of them. But in times like these the tides of the civic cesspool flow to the foot of my door and into my mind; I can’t help but pay attention. So in times like these, I say, its […]

Mayor Bloomberg come unto me. Ralph Nader come unto me. Ron Paul come unto me. Al Gore and Lou Dobbs come unto me. The age demanded: term limits, proportional representation, less sensitivity and nostalgia, more noise…more noise…more noise.

From the world-leaders-wouldn’t-recognize-irony-if-it-hit-them-in-the-face-(and often does)-department: Raul Castro called his brother “irreplaceable” in a speech today.

John Stewart saves the Oscars by denigrating the entire culture surrounding them. Chris Rock tried the same thing a few years ago but had to censor himself. Stewart doesn’t have to censor his snide side. No one ever has to censor their snide side. Just their bad words.

Try getting police chiefs on the phone if you ever want to feel futile. Try talking in a deep vocal register to any stranger on the phone. Try as you might, you’ll sound like a twelve-year-old.

So McCain can still get it up. Good for him. But I must say that when I read the headline in the Times (”McCain Romantically Linked to Lobbyist” or some such drivel) I was hoping it was Fred Thompson. Hey, Barack tells me to believe the impossible.

The Times editorial board wants to believe that Obama can alleviate poverty. The Journal editorial board wants to believe that a yet-to-be-named, anti-tax Republican can close the deficit. Both camps have lost sight of the one thing needful–refineries, refineries, refineries…
